She held a number of positions in the cabinet of the Government of Odisha between 2000 to 2004 before being elected as President. The President holds office for a tenure of five years from the date on which enters the office.  The Electoral College elects the President of India, which includes the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of the state.

What are the Conditions to be elected as President

  • There are several norms for a person to be eligible to become a citizen of the country.
  • A person who is a native of India and has a minimum of 35 years of age can eligible for the presidential election.
  • The person should qualify for the conditions to be elected as a member of the Lok Sabha.
  • The President of India should not hold any office of profit under the Central Government, State Government, and any public authority.

Rajendra Prasad (1950 – 1962)

Rajendra Prasad was the first president of India. He was the President of the Indian National Congress Party and he was also a politician, lawyer, and journalist. He wrote many popular books like Atmakatha, India Divided, etc. His lifespan was from 03 December 1884 to 28 February 1963.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1962 – 1967)

In the year 05 September 1888, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born. His birthday was celebrated as Teacher’s Day and he was awarded Bharat Ratna in the year 1954. He was an Indian philosopher and received several awards during his career.

Zakir Husain (1967 – 1969)

Zakir Husain was the third president of India. He died on 3rd May 1969 and has a short period as the President due to his death in his serving period. He previously served as Governor of Bihar and as Vice President of India before he came to President.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri ( 1969 – 1974)

As a President, Giri was the main individual to be chosen as a free candidate. After the finish of his full term, Giri was respected by the Government of India with the Bharat Ratna in the year 1975.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed ( 1974 – 1977)

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the fifth President and he is the second President who died in the post of President. BD Jattha was made Acting President. Ahmed was educated in India and studied history at the University of Cambridge, graduating in the year 1927. After returning to India, he was elected to the Assam legislature in the year 1935.

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy ( 1977 – 1982)

Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy was the sixth President of India and he joined the Indian National Congress. and served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He was the Minister for Prohibition, Housing, and Forests of the Madras state for two years from 1949 – 1951. He was directly elected to the post of Lok Sabha speaker and became the youngest President who occupied Rashtrapati Bhavan and contested twice for the post of President.

Giani Zail Singh (1982 – 1987)

Giani Zail Singh was the first Sikh to hold office and was the seventh President of India. He was elected in the times which was the most controversial period marked by Operation Blue star. In the year 1972, he was selected as a Congress Chief Minister of Punjab.

Ramaswamy Venkatraman (1987 – 1992)

R. Venkatraman was elected as the President of India. Earlier he was the Vice-President of India from the year 1984 to 1987. He received many honors from several parts of the world.

Shankar Dayal Sharma ( 1992 – 1997)

In the year 1992, he was elected as the 9th President of India. The International Bar association gave Sharma the living legend of Law award of recognition for his remarkable commitment to the legitimate calling globally and for responding to the standard of law.

Kocheril Raman Naarayan (1997 – 2002)

K.R. Narayanan was the first Dalit President of India and he entered into politics and won three continuous times in general elections to the Lok Sabha. In the year 1992, he was elected as the ninth Vice President who belongs to the Dalit community to hold the post of President.

Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam ( 2002 – 2007)

Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India. He was involved in the development of ballistic missiles and launch vehicle technology in the nation. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna award and he was an inspiration to the young generation for achieving foster education and values.

Pratibha Patil (2007 – 2012)

Pratibha Patil was the Governor of Rajasthan and in the year 1962 to 1985, she was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and was elected from Amravati to the Lok Sabha in 1991.

Pranab Mukherjee ( 2012 – 2017)

Dr. Pranab Mukherjee was elected five times to the Rajya Sabha in 1969 and twice to Lok Sabha from the year 2004. Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress was his own party which later on was merged with Congress in the year 1989.

Shri Ram Nath Kovind ( 2017 – 2022)

Kovind was an Indian lawyer and politician. He was the 14th President of India. He is a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party and the Governor of Bihar. Kovind was designated as a presidential competitor by the decision NDA alliance and won the 2017 presidential race.

Draupadi Murmu ( 2022 – 2027)

Draupadi Murmu has become the 15th President of India. She has become the first tribal and second woman to become President of India. Draupadi is a tribal leader from Odisha.
