UPSC CSE SELECTION PROCESS 2023: Result, Selection, Merit List

Selection Procedure:

The civil Services Exam comprises two successive stages.

  1. Civil Services (Preliminary) Exams (Objective Type) for the selection of applicants for the Main Examination; and
  2. Civil Services (Main) Exam (Written and Interview) for the selection of aspirants for the various services and posts.

Preliminary Examination:

  • The preliminary Exam will consist of two papers of Objective type
  • Questions will be (multiple choice questions)
  • Questions will carry a maximum of 400 marks in the subjects set out in subsection (A) of Section II.
  • The exam is intended to provide as a screening test only
  • Only those applicants who will declare by the organization have qualified in the Preliminary Exam in the year will be qualified for admission to the Main Exam.

Main Examination: 

  • Main Exam will consist of written exam and an interview test.
  • Written Exam will consists of 9 papers of conventional essay type in the subjects
  • Out of which two papers will be of qualifying nature.
  • Every paper will be of three hours duration.
  • Applicants will have the option to answer all the question papers, except Paper-I in English or Hindi.
  • Applicants, who obtain such least amount qualifying marks in the written part of the Main Exam as may be fixed by authority at their discretion, shall be call by them for an interview or for a Personality Test.
  • Number of applicants to be convened for interview will be regarding two times the number of vacancies to be filled.

Note: 

  • Marks obtained in the Preliminary Exam by students who are acknowledged qualified for admission to the Main Exam will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.
  • Number of applicants to be admitted to the Main Exam will be about twelve to thirteen times the total probable number of vacancies to be filled in the year in the various Services and Posts.

(III) Interview Test: 

  • Interview will carry 275 marks
  • Interview will be organized with no least amount qualifying marks.
  • Applicants will be interviewed by a Board who will have before them a record of his/ her career.
  • Applicants will be asked questions on topic of general interest.
  • Object of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of students for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased observers.
