Applicants who are going to apply for the Engineering Services Examination they should ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility conditions for admission to the Examination. Selection Processes for the Engineering Services Examination are given below:

UPSC ESE Selection Process:

The Selection Process will be done in three stages :

  • Preliminary Test
  • Mains Test
  • Personality Test

Written Examination:

  • Engineering Services (Preliminary/ Stage-I) Examination
  • The exam will consist of two objective types (multiple choices) questions papers
  • Exam carrying a maximum of 500 marks (Paper 1 – 200 Marks & Paper II – 300 Marks).
  • Only those applicants who will get declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary/ Stage-I Exam in the year they will be eligible for admission to the Mains/ Stage-II Exam of that year
  • Marks obtained in Preliminary/ Stage-I Exam by students who are declared qualified for admission to the Mains/Stage-II Examination will be counted for determining their final order of merit.
  • Number of applicants gets admitted to the Mains/ Stage-II Exam will be about six to seven-time total estimated number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this exam

Engineering Services (Main/stage-II) Exam

  • The exam will consist of two conventional type papers in Engineering Discipline-specific
  • Duration of exam will be three hours
  • Maximum marks of 600 (300 Marks in each paper).

III. Personality Test: 

Stage-III

Personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks of such of applicants who qualify on the basis of the written exam

UPSC ESE 2023 Selection
  • Selection of applicants for Indian Engineering Services, will be based on the three stages of examination of the candidates.
  • These stages include the Preliminary Test, Mains Exam and the Personality Test.
  • Those who clear these stages will be eligible for the different posts under (IES) of Government of India.
  • The recruitment process will consist of a written exam which will be followed by personal interviews. 
  • The first stage is the Preliminary Exam, which will consist of two sets of written exams that is Paper-1 and Paper-2
  • Those who clear this stage can sit for the next stage.
  • Next stage of the written exam is the Mains Exam, which will also have two sets of the exam that is Paper-1 and Paper-2.
  • Those who will pass this stage will be forwarded to the last stage of the UPSC ESE
  • Personality Test is the very last stage of the Selection Process of the IES.
  • In this stage, you need to face a round of personal interview.
  • The interview round is mainly to judge the ability of applicants to handle and manage the situations and problems
  • Personality Test is also to check the mental alertness, mental caliber and awareness of the subject matter of applicants
  • It is important for applicants to be really good with the subject matter and the nearby to clear this final stage.
  • For that reason, applicants should be good in the engineering section he/she wants to work for as a designated Class-1 Officer of the Government of India.
