UPSC exam pattern for the Preliminary exam stage consists of two papers, which get organized in one day. The prelims exam is a qualifying stage to filter students for the mains exam. Papers consist of objective-type questions with MCQ multiple choices of answers.

- All of the main papers apart from for the language papers A and B are of a merit-ranking nature.
- Papers A and B will be of qualifying nature
- Students need to score at least 25% in each for the marks from their Paper I – Paper VII to be given weightage.
- Paper A is not necessary for those applicants who belong to States of AP, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim as well as those with hearing impairment
- Indian Language paper consists of any of the languages integrated into the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

Stage 3: UPSC Interview
- This is the final stage of the IAS Exam before the final results will be declared.
- Formally it is known as the Interview/Personality Test and counted as a part of the Mains Exam for merit ranking purpose.
